“Chasing M2 or FIFISH V6?” is one of the questions underwater pilots in the advanced class ask most often. The problem: both names now stand for whole families. Before we compare, we therefore clarify which variants actually exist.

Important up front: we have not had either of these drones in the water ourselves. The basis is the official manufacturer data, the manufacturers' shops and the grading scheme of our ranking. This is an assessment, not a hands-on test.

  • M2 S: the current successor, listed in the Chasing shop with three packages.
  • M2 Pro and M2 Pro Max: the industrial variants. For the M2 Pro Max, Chasing quotes 200 m depth, a 300 Wh battery and a weight of around 8 kg. That is a different league, in price too.

  • V6: the original model. It is still listed in the German QYSEA shop, from €1,499.
  • V6S: an older variant. It is no longer in QYSEA's navigation, but according to QYSEA its accessories fit the V6 Expert.

Where the differences lie

Light and image: According to the manufacturer, the V6 Expert brings 6,000 lumens in total (two lamps of 3,000 each), the M2 S 4,000 in total (2 × 2,000). On paper the two cameras are close: the same sensor size, 12 megapixels, 4K at 30 frames per second and RAW photos. The M2 S also films Full HD at up to 120 frames, while the V6 Expert has the wider field of view.

Battery and runtime: Here two philosophies show. The V6 Expert relies on a large, built-in battery with fast charging and, optionally, power from shore. The M2 S has a smaller but replaceable battery. With a second battery in your bag, you are ready to go again after swapping, instead of waiting for the charger. According to Chasing, all runtime figures apply “depending on operating conditions”. What current, light and cold make a difference, we will clarify in our article on battery life in practice (planned).

Movement: According to the manufacturers, both move freely in all directions. Chasing quotes eight vector thrusters, QYSEA six degrees of freedom with attitude and depth hold (Posture Lock, Depth Lock). Whether the drones feel different cannot be read from data sheets.

Accessories: Both are accessory platforms. On the V6 Expert everything runs through the Q-IF interface with over 20 tools, up to water sensors and underwater positioning. According to Chasing, the M2 S covers the hobby classics: gripper arm, metal detector, sonar for keeping your distance, laser scale and action cam. What you need for treasure hunting is in our guide Treasure hunting underwater.

Which suits whom?

  • You want to dive for a long time at a stretch, often in dark Alpine lakes: FIFISH V6 Expert. More light, a larger battery and, if needed, power from shore.
  • You want several dives in a row without a charging break: Chasing M2 S. With a replaceable battery you swap on the shore and carry on.
  • You plan measurements, sensors or positioning: FIFISH V6 Expert, because of the Q-IF interface.
  • You want a gripper arm and a metal detector, but nothing more: both fit. Compare the package prices with gripper.
  • You are in Switzerland: For the V6 Expert there is a Swiss franc price from the retailer. For the M2 S we found no Swiss retailer price, only the US dollar price in the Chasing shop.
  • You mainly want to film: A class below may be enough for you. Take a look at the FIFISH V-EVO and the Chasing Gladius Mini S, or the brand comparison FIFISH vs Chasing.

You will find all the details on the Expert in the review FIFISH V6 Expert.

Practical tip to finish

Do not just calculate the price of the drone, but of the package you really need: tether length, gripper, case and, if applicable, a second battery. Only then will you see which of the two underwater drones works out cheaper for you.
